Student Law Review Writing Workshop

On 20 April, the UKZN Student Law Review hosted a writing workshop for the authors of the chosen abstracts. Mr Gevers was invited to speak about the process of writing. He explained that the three tasks involved in the process are: writing, reading and researching and editing. He further described the five rules for effective writing:

The five rules for writing are:

  1. Passion. You must be passionate about the topic. You have to want to write, not because of the end product, but because of the argument.

  2. Creativity. Be creative and organic in how you write.

  3. Realistic. Be innovate, but realistic about what you are capable of doing. Writing is generally the art of the possible.

  4. Discipline. Related to being realistic is being disciplined. You need to have a block of time that is set aside for writing. Have a timeframe and do not allow research to get in the way of writing.

  5. Advice. Do not be afraid to ask for advice. Raise questions in class or in conversations with friends.

Most importantly, you have to enjoy writing. Thank you to Mr Gevers for taking the time to speak to the SLR and the authors and for sharing your knowledge with us.
